Free Radon Test Kits Available for Mahoning County Residents

January is National Radon Action Month and the Mahoning County PACE Environmental Health Workgroup is urging everyone to participate by testing their home for radon gas. Free test kits are available from the District Board of Health through a grant from the Ohio Department of Health and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA).

Radon is a radioactive gas that occurs naturally in soil and can enter homes through cracks and holes in the foundation.  Once inside the home, it can build up to high levels that pose a health threat.  The U.S. Surgeon General recommends all homes be tested for radon, which is colorless, odorless, and tasteless.  While exposure to elevated levels can increase one’s risk for developing lung cancer, homeowners can reduce their exposure by testing their homes and taking appropriate action to reduce elevated levels.  Radon problems can be fixed, but the only way to know if elevated levels exist in your home is to test.

For more information about how to obtain a free test kit, contact Jane Warga at (330) 270-2855 ext. 131, Heather Krause at (330) 270-2855 ext 141, or visit the District Board of Health at 50 Westchester Drive in Austintown.

More information about radon levels in Mahoning County is available on the District Board of Health website at http://www.mahoning-health.org/healthreports-specialreports.asp .  Public Service Announcements (print, radio, and television), sponsored by the USEPA, are available at http://www.epa.gov/radon/rnpsa.html and http://www.epapsa.com/newradon/
