A message from the health commissioner:
Very often, I receive questions from the public asking what exactly public health does. Most know of our role in restaurant inspections and public health nuisance abatement, but few understand the true scope of local public health department responsibilities. In a nutshell, I tell them that we promote and protect the public’s health and work to ensure conditions in which all people can live healthy lives, but what does that really mean? In 1994, the Public Health Functions Working Group, convened by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, identified 10 essential services that form the foundation of the nation’s public health strategy to prevent disease, and promote and protect the public’s health. Twenty-three years later, these Ten Essential Services continue to be the bedrock for the services provided by public health. This is what public health does! This is what the Mahoning County District Board of Health does!
